With all the variety of products available in the market, it is always a good idea to do a little research before hitting the stores or pressing the buy button on your laptop screen. Purchasing a set of golf clubs is no exception, especially when you are a newbie. Whether buying for yourself or your significant other, just remember that the women’s golf clubs sets are usually different than men’s.
There are many details that I intend to bring to your attention in this article to help you choose the best possible golf clubs.
What is in Your Golf Club Set?
Some of you are probably already familiar with the set; for those who are not, here is a quick short tutorial:
A typical golf club set has 12-14 clubs, but twelve clubs are sufficient for a beginner. A typical club set would have three woods, at least 1 hybrid (3H) and seven irons, at least one wedge and a putter. Experienced golfers usually carry an extra wedge and one specialty hybrid, but you will not need it – yet.
Drivers help with hitting long shots, and they have longer shafts and longer and larger heads.
Most of the clubs in your bag are known as iron. The number stamped on it shows the length of the club and curvature at its feet. It is recommended for short distances, less than 200 yards. It helps you to maneuver the ball towards the hole. Irons usually have shorter shafts and smaller club heads than woods.
As the name suggests, hybrids are the combination of irons and wood. It is usually difficult to hit with long iron club especially when the distance is more than 150 yards; in that case, hybrids replace irons.
Wedges are a special kind of iron, and the first wedge is used for pitching therefore known as pitching wedge (PW). Other than pitching wedges, there are swinging wedges (SW).
A putter helps to hit the ball into the hole. Putters come in many different styles and facilitate clubs alignment with the ball. There is short-belly, long- bent, center-shafted, heel-toe and mallet putter.
Terms You Should Know
Forgiveness is the term which is used when your golf club as all the right elements that together allow you to have best possible swing and improves the clubs contact with the ball. A club with more feature is considered to offer a lot of forgiveness.
How Women’s Golf Clubs are Different
Now that you have an idea what a typical golf set contains, let’s analyze how women’s golf club set is different than men’s.
The most significant difference between men and women is that on average women are shorter than men. Height plays an important role when buying for clubs; it allows you to swing comfortably and you can aim for long distances with ease. It is recommended that you should buy standard clubs if you are of average height and build, but if not then you will need special clubs according to your physique.
Another thing is that women generally swing slower than men and to facilitate their swings it is recommended that they should use a driver with high loft. Men use drivers with 9-11 loft, for women it is 12- degree. Also, ladies drivers are usually lighter; with higher loft and lighter drivers offer more sweet spot to women golfers.
Women’s clubs are lighter in weight and higher in loft. There is a wide variety of woods are available for the women, going up to 13-wood. As for irons, women’s irons have softer flex and slightly heavier club head. Long irons are getting obsolete anyway, and more and more players are gravitating towards hybrids. Hybrids are suitable for beginners as well as women.
Mostly graphite is used for ladies’ clubs, which is lighter than steel. With graphite shaft, players can hit with more force and can have better torque. Men can also get graphite shaft; it is especially recommended for older men because of its light weight.
Classic putters are least forgiving and always tend to hit off Centre; therefore for beginners, not essential women, mallet putters are recommended. Mallet putter, just like large headed drivers, allows more forgiveness and make tee shots more consistent. Manufacturers give different alignments and shapes at the back end of the putter to help it align better.
Ladies hands are usually smaller than men; therefore their clubs have different grips which are smaller in diameter and shorter in length. Having a club with right grip is crucial because the right size of grip permits better hold of the clubs which means better swing.
This is all general information, and we know everybody’s body is different, and as you continue to play, you will soon figure out what is best for you.
